Notarized translations of Hebrew documents for the Israeli Ministry of Interior and current legislation

According to current Israeli law and internal guidelines of the Israeli Ministry of Interior, foreign documents must be submitted to the Israeli Ministry of Interior accompanied by a notarized Hebrew translation by a licensed Israeli notary public. In rare cases, original documents in English or Arabic, which are the official languages of Israel along with Hebrew, are accepted, but documents in all other languages of the world must be notarized into Hebrew (translations into English from other languages are not accepted by the Israeli Ministry of Interior!

Also, documents translated into Hebrew abroad are not accepted, even if they bear the stamp of a foreign notary and an apostille. Even Hebrew translations made by professional Israeli translators are accepted by the Israeli Ministry of Interior (Misrad ha-pnim) only if they are notarized by an Israeli notary who personally speaks the language of the translation; a simple notarization of the translator’s signature is not enough!

In other words, Misrad Apnim (Israeli Ministry of Interior) accepts only those foreign documents whose translation has been personally translated by a licensed Israeli notary who speaks the language of the translation, and notarized as a NOTARIAL TRANSLATION in accordance with the Israeli Notaries Law of 1976. All other types of Hebrew translations from other languages are not accepted by the Israeli Ministry of Interior and other governmental organizations!

Most native Israelis are naturally not affected by these requirements, since almost all of their documents were issued in Israel and no translation into Hebrew is required, unlike new repatriates (olim hadashim), relocants, expats, immigrants and refugees, whose documents were not issued in Hebrew.

Why do I need notarized translations of Hebrew documents for the Israeli Interior Ministry?

Most notarized translations of documents are required for non-Jewish foreigners seeking to obtain residency in Israel through family reunification (ikhud mishpachot achmash) and undergoing the step family unification procedure in Israel (STUPRO), such as spouses of Israeli citizens, parents of non-Jewish soldiers who have served in the Israeli army, single elderly parents of Israeli citizens, and children of Israelis born to non-Jewish foreigners.
